1. Antihistamines

  • Purpose: These medications are used to relieve symptoms such as dizziness and nausea associated with vertigo.
  • Examples: Meclizine, Dimenhydrinate.

2. Anticholinergics

  • Purpose: Help alleviate symptoms of dizziness.
  • Examples:

  • Side Effects: May cause dry mouth, blurred vision, and other minor side effects.

3. Benzodiazepines

  • Purpose: Provide short-term relief from vertigo symptoms.
  • Examples: Diazepam, Clonazepam.
  • How It Works: These medications suppress the central nervous system to reduce the sensation of dizziness.
  • Caution: Due to the potential for dependence, they are typically prescribed for short-term use.

4. Vestibular Suppressants

  • Purpose: Help reduce dizziness and nausea by suppressing the vestibular system.
  • Examples: Phenothiazines such as Promethazine.
  • Usage: Often used in acute cases of vertigo.

5. Diuretics

  • Purpose: Primarily used in cases of vertigo caused by fluid imbalance in the inner ear, such as in Meniere’s disease.
  • Examples:
  • How It Works: Reduces fluid levels in the body, thereby lowering inner ear fluid pressure and alleviating vertigo symptoms.
  • Caution: Salt intake may need to be restricted alongside this treatment.

6. Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)

  • Purpose: Antidepressants used for patients with chronic dizziness.
  • How It Works: Helps alleviate anxiety and stress associated with vertigo.

  • Side Effects: Long-term use may cause side effects, so it should be monitored by a doctor.

8. Betahistine

  • Purpose: Improves blood flow in the inner ear and reduces vertigo symptoms.
  • Examples:
  • How It Works: Dilates blood vessels in the inner ear to reduce pressure on the vestibular system.
  • Side Effects: May cause nausea, headache, or mild discomfort.

9. Supportive Medications to Reduce Dizziness

  • Antiemetics: Used to reduce nausea and vomiting. Examples include Metoclopramide and Ondansetron.
  • Anti-Anxiety Medications: Sometimes prescribed to manage anxiety arising from prolonged dizziness.

Comprehensive Treatment Approach

Vertigo treatment is often customized for each patient, making the correct dosage and regular medication use under a doctor’s supervision critical. In addition to medication, lifestyle changes, vestibular rehabilitation, and other supportive methods can be combined to enhance the effectiveness of treatment.
