What is BPPV?

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is a common cause of vertigo (dizziness) that occurs when crystals (otoliths) in the inner ear’s balance organ move out of their normal position. It is characterized by short episodes of dizziness triggered by head movements. The dislodged crystals interfere with the balance fluid in the inner ear, sending incorrect signals to the brain and causing vertigo.

What are the symptoms of BPPV?

  • Sudden and brief episodes of dizziness
  • A feeling of imbalance
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness triggered by head movements (e.g., looking up, getting out of bed, or turning the head)

What causes BPPV?

The exact cause of BPPV is unknown, but certain factors can increase the risk:

  • Head trauma
  • Aging
  • Inner ear infections
  • Prolonged bed rest

How is BPPV diagnosed?

BPPV is usually diagnosed through a clinical examination and a specific test called the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. During this test, the doctor observes dizziness and involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) to confirm the diagnosis.

How is BPPV treated?

  • Positional maneuvers: Techniques like the Epley maneuver and Semont maneuver are used to reposition the crystals to their correct location in the inner ear.
  • Vestibular rehabilitation: Balance exercises are especially beneficial in recurrent cases.
  • Medications: Anti-nausea medications can provide relief but do not address the underlying issue of displaced crystals.

Can BPPV resolve on its own?

In some cases, BPPV may resolve without treatment. However, untreated BPPV can lead to recurring episodes, significantly affecting quality of life.

Does BPPV recur?

Yes, there is a risk of BPPV recurring. It is especially more likely to recur in people who have had this problem before.

Is BPPV dangerous?

BPPV is typically benign and not a serious health issue. However, dizziness increases the risk of falls, especially in older individuals, which can be a significant concern.

Can BPPV be prevented?

While there is no definitive way to prevent BPPV, the following measures may help reduce the risk:

  • Avoid head injuries
  • Maintain a balanced and active lifestyle
  • Avoid sudden and forceful head movements

How can you make living with BPPV easier?

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Move slowly and cautiously
  • Rest during vertigo episodes
  • Consult an ENT specialist if episodes recur

By taking these precautions and seeking professional care when needed, you can effectively manage BPPV and reduce its impact on daily life.
